What is Nayakanveshan?
Nayakanveshan is a three month programme of 12 intensive dance training sessions by Padmashri Guru Pratap Pawar, MBE.
The programme covers the subject of male heroes as described in the Natyashastra, the ancient Indian treatise on dance and theatre written more than 2000 years ago.
The Natyashastra’s 6,000 poetic verses set out rules for all aspects of dramatic composition, genres of acting, body movements, make up and costumes, including the Nayak Bheda (or hero distinction), which forms the basis for this programme.
The workshops themselves are based on Pratap Pawar’s own Nayak Bheda choreography created under the direction of Padmavibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj in the 1970s.
It is the first time Pratap Pawar has taught his much acclaimed choreography, making this programme a rare and important part of the process of preserving and developing the Nayak Bheda for the future.
The music for the programme is by maestros Raj Kumar Rizvi (Vocal) and the late Pandit Durga Lal (Pakhawaj). The music has been digitally remastered for this course.
